This is the portrait of Janis Rozentāls' wife, Finnish singer Elli Forsell, painted in 1906. Elli was the only woman of his life who greatly inspired his art. Janis Rozentāls‘ art represents a beautiful fusion between the school of traditional Latvian painting and themes and motifs of Art Nouveau and Symbolism.

Always hard working, Janis Rozentāls (1866 - 1916) spent most of his time in his studio, taking only short breaks. He painted with a cigarette in one hand, chain-smoking. Rozentāls was a celebrity, popular and loved, his art sold well during his lifetime.
