Riga 1901 Series - "Jubilee Handkerchiefs"

In 1901, celebration of Riga's 700th Jubilee took place. The central event in the opulent festivity program undoubtedly was the Industry and Crafts Jubilee Exhibition.

Numerous attractive souvenirs were produced to commemorate the Riga 700 Jubilee. For instance, the Jubilee Exhibition Poster drawn by the Latvian artist, Rihards Zarins, was also issued as a postal stamp. Mock “Old Riga”, which was built for the jubilee on the banks of Riga Canal, was the key theme of pretty postcards. Yet, the most original souvenirs were the Jubilee Handkerchiefs, which for some time to come remained as reminder of the colorful events of Riga in the summer of 1901.
